The Common Blue has to be one of our prettiest butterflies on these shores. Sporting an almost electric blue coat, the male instantly grabs attention as he flits energetically around his territory (female is mainly brown). The Hook Peninsula is a favourite haunt, as is anywhere that its main larval food plant grows in abundance-Birdsfoot trefoil. An interesting fact also is that another favourite food plant is Lesser trefoil, or as we know it better, Shamrock. This picture of a male Common blue on Birdsfoot trefoil was taken at Saltmills.
