Here’s a little 10mm Flat Periwinkle (Littorina obtusata) down in Booley Bay as it makes its way over a lunar like landscape of Barnacles. This sea snail is a member of the same family as winkles and periwinkles.
Smaller than it’s so called “Edible” relative it is just as edible if maybe not as worth the hassle.
Its favourite food is Brown Fucoid Algae and they are found mainly on mid/low tidal zones. They are typically uniform yellow/green through to olive/brown though in more exposed sites they take on a more chequered/striped pattern.
